CCGNJ Undergoes Leadership Change: Luis Del Orbe Named Interim Executive Director

The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, Inc. (CCGNJ) is pleased to announce a transition in its leadership: Effective Friday, November 15, 2024, the Council's Board of Directors appointed Assistant Executive Director Luis Del Orbe as the organization's Interim Executive Director.

Governor's Newly Minted Gambling Panel Could Introduce Crucial Reforms

Six years ago, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy was a central figure in Murphy vs the NCAA, the Supreme Court decision that legalized sports betting and largely remade the gambling landscape. In mid-June, the Governor issued an executive order creating a blue-ribbon panel to remediate the fallout from gambling’s explosive growth since that 2018 court decision.

The New Jersey Casino Control Commission recognized the March observance of Problem Gambling Awareness Month by presenting a Resolution to the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey. Winter 2024 Council Connection Newsletter

The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ) opens the new year propelled by a banner 2023. Last year was noteworthy for significant gains made in a host of areas, for the launch of a new prevention program for youth, and for marking our 40 th Anniversary, a milestone celebrated with a gala honoring Arnie Wexler’s passionate and enduring advocacy on behalf of problem gamblers and their families. More broadly, gambling issues such as excessive marketing and youth exposure to betting received heightened attention from lawmakers, the media and the general public. To these and related matters the Council lent a pivotal, authoritative voice.

Fall 2023 Council Connection Newsletter

Over the last four decades, many changes have taken place in the world of gambling. When I grew up, Nevada was the place to go to gamble, followed by Atlantic City. Throngs of visitors would pay a visit to those select casinos to place a wager, see famous performers, eat delicious and inexpensive food, and hope that they might get lucky with the pull of a slot handle or roll of the dice. In the years to follow, other states recognized the revenue generating benefits of gambling and today most states have made it legal.

A full house joined the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ) on June 9 at the New Jersey Law Center for a Gala celebrating a true landmark: our 40th Anniversary. The evening was certainly one to remember, and I want to thank everyone who helped make it so. The Gala commemorated our four decades of raising awareness of helping problem gamblers and their families, while also honoring the remarkable Arnie Wexler, a former Council Executive Director and a seminal figure in addressing gambling addiction. We also recognized Alice Ostapiuk, whose steadfast dedication throughout her 30 years of employment at the Council has made her indispensable to all fortunate enough to have her as a colleague (to view a video and photos from the Gala, go to CCGNJ’s 40th Anniversary Gala .

2023 is proving to be both a banner year as well as a period of growing challenges for the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ). In March, we observed a very successful Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM) and now turn our attention to our 40th Anniversary Gala, set for Friday, June 9. This special evening will honor Arnie Wexler, a guiding light who has helped countless people find their way into recovery from gambling addiction and served as CCGNJ’s executive director for eight years. Come fall, the will hold its annual Statewide Conference on Disordered Gambling entitled “Four Decades of Gambling Expansion: Why Our Help is Needed Now More than Ever.”

The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ) again joined with the New Jersey Lottery this holiday season in a campaign urging adults to refrain from gifting Lottery tickets to teenagers. This message is all the more critical given the current “pro-gambling” landscape and important research about the worsening condition of youth betting. The campaign stresses that playing the lottery qualifies as gambling, and giving minors lottery tickets for the holidays, or anytime, condones youth gambling and that it’s ok to break the law.

But it’s important to remember that all those data points represent real people, and the vulnerabilities of those people—customers—warrant a closer look at a cautionary tale from across the pond.
