4 Ways to Support Mental Health in the Workplace

The workplace is a common source of stress for many people. Long hours, deadlines, fussy bosses, heavy workloads, irritating coworkers and more can contribute to an employee feeling stressed out.

With Mental Health Awareness month recently concluding, here are four ways your organization can raise awareness and support mental wellness at work.

  1. Flexible Days Off

Some companies have grouped vacation days and sick days. If someone is sick, burned out or just needs some time to relax or get something personal done, they should be able to take off without issue. This helps create an open and honest work environment, resulting in less stress all around. As long as all your work gets done, you can take off as you please.

  1. Promote Self-Care

Granting your employees time to take care of themselves is important. It is also one of the simplest ways you can help your staff. Offer flexibility with scheduling and encourage your workers to take advantage of it. That way there is no excuse for avoiding those check-ups and appointments with physicians. This could even include counseling with therapists of other mental health specialists. You want your team to be happy and healthy so they can give you their best work.

  1. Listen

Take the time to check in with your staff. This could be in the form of one-on-one conversations with employees. Allow them to give feedback and voice their concerns. This shows the staff that their thoughts are valued while also addressing workplace challenges that could be improved. Sometimes just listening to someone can make them feel a lot better.

  1. Anonymous Surveys

Another way to learn the thoughts of your employees is through the use of anonymous surveys. Some people might not feel comfortable being honest with their superiors, especially if they have negative things to say. This way they can express all of their concerns and suggestions without any judgment.

When people are stressed at work, a place where most people spend a majority of their time, it is easy to bring that stress home and into the rest of their lives. Gambling is just one form of addiction that one can develop with declining mental health.
