Sports Gambling Continues to Flourish: NJ Sportsbooks Overtake Nevada Handle for First Time

Sports gambling in East Rutherford, NJ, and the rest of our state has now been legal for a full year. And it took that one full year for New Jersey sportsbooks to overtake the handle and profits of those in Nevada.

Take a look at the numbers:

Even though New Jersey’s May intake was just $1.6 million more than Nevada’s, the message is clear: Nevada no longer holds a monopoly over the U.S. sports gambling market. Other states will undoubtedly take note of New Jersey’s success, meaning Nevada’s share of the market may continue to decrease as more states opt to legalize sports betting.

This certainly doesn’t mean that Nevada is out of the picture. In fact, the state’s May 2019 intake was a new record May record, beating the previous high of $315.5 million from last year. Most of that came from baseball, with a 4.25% hold and profits of $7.8 million for the period.

The Mobile Effect

Mobile sports betting grants New Jersey a huge advantage over Nevada. Gamblers can easily place bets using their smartphones, literally whenever they want. As of now, you can not legally do this in Nevada. Casinos in Nevada continue to battle against the introduction of mobile gambling.

Even those nearby in New York frequently cross state lines solely to place bets on their mobile devices. Wagers placed on smartphones and other devices account for upwards of 80% of New Jersey’s total sportsbook intake.

The Problem Gambling Effect

As these numbers continue to rise, and our state continues to foster more gambling for sports in Monmouth County, NJ, and beyond, the chance that you or someone you love will develop a gambling problem also rises — which isn’t something you should take lightly.

We encourage you to browse our site to learn more about how you can spot the signs of disordered gambling, the negative effects that it can have, and how you can help someone work through their problems.
