Peer Gambling Recovery Specialist (PGRS) Full Time


SUPERVISED BY:  Prevention and Treatment Coordinator            EXEMPTION STATUS: Exempt

SUPERVISES:     None         

SALARY: $50,000 (commensurate with experience) with comprehensive health care, dental, vision, vacation, and other benefits.                                                 


  1. Serve as coach to model the process of recovery through their personal experience, while serving as an advocate for multiple pathways to recovery/wellness. 
  2. Provide peer support for persons to educate them about treatment services and other support resources to help them in their road to recovery.
  3. Provide support for the state’s dedicated 800-GAMBLER problem gambling helpline; and to provide community outreach to educate and raise awareness about problem gambling and resources available through the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey. 
  4. Provides crisis intervention through supportive listening, providing basic health education, assisting clients’ access to various treatment and support services, and referring clients to needed resources.
  5. Conducts initial assessment, to determine individual client needs. 
  6. Attends community meetings/outreach activities to establish communication and rapport to promote CCGNJ services. 
  7. Conducts at least (3) presentations per week.
  8. Prepares and distributes informational literature. 
  9. Refers clients for appointments with treatment providers, reminds them of pending appointments as needed. 
  10. Assists with client retention by following up on all contacts for continued progress assessment and locating those clients who have moved or lost contact with the program. 
  11. Assists with planning, organizing, and implementing community special events such as health fairs, workshops etc. 
  12. Participates in staff meeting and conferences. 
  13. Reports on community outreach activities including problems and concerns. 
  14. Prepares written reports and maintains records of outreach contacts and activities. 
  15. Maintains a good working relationship with all members of the community.
  16. Other related duties as assigned.


  1. Possess a valid NJ driver’s license.
  2. High School Diploma or GED.
  3. Two (2) years prior experience as a Peer Counselor, lived experience, or addiction recovery is strongly preferred.
  4. General knowledge of community and/or social service resources and programs.
  5. Skill in assessing client needs. 
  6. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 
  7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. 
  8. Ability to operate computers and other office equipment. 
  9. Ability to write reports and maintain records. 
  10. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact. 
  11. Ability to interact with the public, health care/treatment providers, community organizations, and other social service agencies. 
  12. Ability to maintain poise and courtesy under pressure.
